Study Journalism“What’s the news today?” This is one of the most basic everyday questions people encounter. In fact, for some, nothing beats a breakfast with toasts, a warm cup of coffee and while reading their favorite newspaper of watching their preferred news program. But who decides what gets printed or aired? According to Andrew Marr, "News is what the consensus of journalists determines it to be." By definition, Journalism is the discipline of conveying news, descriptive materials and commentaries through a wide array of media. This includes print, radio, television and just recently, the Internet. Journalists have often been regarded as vanguards of truth and individuals who have a bird’s eye view of the things happening in the society. Unlike medicine or law, Journalism traces its roots from the 1600’s although ancient messengers or tribal scribes may be considered as the earliest journalists. Published in 1605 in Strassburg, Johann Carolus' Relation aller Fürnemmen und gedenckwürdigen Historien is said to be the first newspaper. The first journalism in America opened in 1908 and since then, the field has evolved as technology improved and social medial proliferated. Journalism covers a long roster of fields and sub-branches. Print journalism or news or stories distributed using print media is probably the most popular and the most common. Certain popular culture characters, most famously known are Clark Kent from Superman and Peter Parker from Spiderman, are print journalists. Another popular track in Journalism is broadcast journalism or simply broadcasting either over the radio or television. Aside from print and broadcast, journalism covers a wide array of topics that aspiring journalists can choose from. There is your basic news writing, which covers the most important issues of day-to-day living. For sports enthusiasts, sports journalism covers an extensive arena of different athletic competitions. The tone of sports journalism is more intense, opinionated and in a sense, animated because you have to give a blow by blow account of what happened in the most detailed way as possible. Another type or kind of journalism that is growing in popularity is investigative journalism. This is a form of an in-depth reporting focused on a particular subject. Documentary film making is a more creative form of investigative journalism. Being a journalist can mean different things. One can be a writer or an editor for a newspaper, a columnist for a fashion magazine, an anchor or field reporter for a broadcasting corporation, and even a photographer. Since events take place everyday, journalism is probably one of the most dynamic professions one can be involved in.
