A Brief History of Antigua and Barbuda


The first inhabitants of the islands of Antigua and Bermuda were the Siboney in the year 2400 BC.

The Arawak Indians and the Carib populated the islands before Columbus arrive in 1493 in his second trip.

The island of Antigua was called originally Wadadli by its native people.

Antigua was discovered by Columbus, who named it after a church in Seville, Spain.

Antigua was colonized in 1632, while Bermuda was colonized in 1661.

English settlers formed a colony in the islands in 1667.

Slavery was abolished in 1834 and the island Antigua and Bermuda became an independent state within the British Commonwealth of Nations in 1981.
