Best places to visit in Albania

The main airport in Albania is Mother Teresa of Calcutta and it is located in the capital Tirana, 40 kilometers from the city. Every hour there are buses from to airport to the city. You can also take a taxi.

To travel across the country by train is inexpensive. You purchase the tickets the same day you travel. The trains are not in good condition and may be uncomfortable. The trains travel at a maximum of 60 kilometers per hour, so it takes a while to cover the distance.

Cities to visit

Tirana

It is the capital of Albania. It is so small you can cover the city on foot. The architecture is soviet style although you can also see Turkish and Roman.

In Tirana you will find the University of Tirana, the Agriculture Institute, the Science Academy, and the National Library. Other sites of interest are Etehem Bey Mosque, the National Museum of Albanian Culture, the National History Museum, the Natural Science Museum, and the Archeology Museum.

Berat

It is 2000 years old and one of the oldest cities in Albania and it is also one of the most beautiful cities. It is located in the South of Albania. Berat is also known as the city of a thousand windows.

Durres

It is the second largest city in Albania with a population of 85,000. It is also the main seaport in the country. Durres is located in a small peninsula on the Adriatic Sea coast.

Gjirokastra

Situates in the south of Albania, it has a population of 30,000. There are 23 museums in the city.

Shkodra

With a population of 81,000 it is a city of narrow street and high brick walls on both sides. Since the Second World War, some areas of Shkodra have been transformed with wide streets and tall buildings. The industrial area was built in the northern part of the city. Some sites of interest: Shkodra’s castle, the Turkish Bath, Plumbi Mosque.

Kruja

Sites of interest: The Castle, the Museum Skenderbeg, and the Old Bazaar. .

Vlora

Located in the Southwest of Albania on the Adriatic coast, it is the second main seaport in the country. Some time ago Vlora was well know for its wines, olives and salt. Today it is an industrial city and a place for education. It is also a tourist city with many hotels and recreation areas along its beaches.
