The Economy of Armenia


Under the former Soviet central planning system, Armenia's economy became a modern industrial sector that sullied machinery for the construction and textile industries among others. However following the conflict with Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenia's economy has suffered.

Turkey and Azerbaijan have closed the distribution routes and the traffic roads to Armenia leave the country in lack of energy. Bread and food are also scarce in Armenia.

The number of unemployed persons in Armenia are around 1.9 million.

Agriculture is the second larges sector in Armenia's economy.

Vegetables, fruits (specially grapes) and tobacco among others are cultivated in Armenia.

Armenia imports a large amount of food items from other countries.
