The Climate in Argentina

The weather in Argentina will vary according to the part of the country where one would be located, the north, center or south.

The north has a tropical type of weather. Temperatures can reach 48 degrees Celsius.

In the center of the country the temperatures are moderate, not excessively hot or cold.

The south is the coldest area of the country where temperatures can reach -16 degrees Celsius.

Argentina’s weather will also vary by the altitude of the location. In higher altitudes the temperatures will be lower. In the Andes for instance, snow will be on the mountains all year around.

In the northwest there is recurrent flooding. The rivers in Mesopotamia and the Grand Chaco frequently overflow with the summer rains.

The climate is strongly influenced by the winds. Strong winds from the Atlantic Ocean bring in rain and humidity. Winds from the Pacific cross the Andes in the west causing dry weather conditions.

When the winds come from the Antarctica the temperatures turn much colder.

The most feared winds in Argentina are “Pampero” and “Zonda.” The cold and stormy Pampero winds go across the northwest through the plains of LaPampa carrying with it a heavy rains, strong thunderstorms, lighting and thunder. The hot and dry Zonda winds come from the Northeast in the winter. Even though the bring in a clear climate, many people complain that the Zonda is the cause of many headaches and sicknesses.

Argentina is located in the Southern Hemisphere, and their seasons are opposite to those in countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Winter months in Argentina are from June to September.
