Living in American Samoa is a rugged experience and some of the comforts available in more developed nations are clearly missing.

The electricity in American Samoa is officially 120V & 240V 60Hz. There are three types of plugs that could be found in the country: a Japanese-style plug with two parallel flat blades, a European plug with two circular metal pins, and an Australian-style plug with two flat angled blades and one vertical grounding blade.

There are good telex, telegraph, facsimile and cellular telephone services. American Samoa has a domestic satellite system with 1 Comsat earth station. The international country code is 684.

There are three radio stations, AM 2, FM 3, and shortwave 0 (2006), and one television station. The Internet country code is .as.

The easiest way to travel on the dirt roads of the islands is by cycle. Hiring a car is possible but expensive. The public bus system is unpredictable as the drivers do not keep to the time table and people sometimes find themselves stranded after a certain time in the day. Inter-Island Airways flies between Pago Pago and the Manu'a Islands, while both Inter-Island Airways and Polynesian Airlines fly between Pago Pago and Apia in Samoa.
