Belgium has one of the best health care systems in the world. There are state and private hospitals and practitioners and fees are payable in both case. State insurance and/or private insurance is obligatory for people living in Belgium.
There are no major health risks in Belgium but rabies is present in a small number of animals so vaccination before arrival should be considered.
A highly developed and stable democracy, Belgium has very low crime rates. Belgian law enforcement and security officials maintain a solid anti-terrorism effort and provide a peaceful environment for tourists and business. Prior police approval is required for public demonstrations in Belgium, and police oversight is routinely provided to ensure adequate security for participants and passers-by.
