Gastronomy in Benin


Some popular appetizers in the country are beans and rice (made of rice, kidney beans, pigeon peas, black pepper and salt) and Fufu (usually prepared from yams). Usual soups that are served before the main course are Calalu (cooked with any kind of meat, oil, cassava, mustard greens, spinach, collard greens, kale, peeled and chopped tomatoes), palm butter (made of palm nuts, garlic, onion, tomatoes and smoked fish), peanut soup (prepared with chicken, peanuts, carrots, tomatoes, salt, garlic, black pepper and peanut butter), pepper soup (cooked with goat meat, dried shrimps, onion, chilly pepper, black pepper, salt, mint, utavi leafs) and Efo-riro (made of boiled fish, palm oil, pepper, onion, knorr/maggi, salt, tomato and scoth bonnet)

Kinds of meat common in the country are lamb, chicken, fish, beef and pork. Some of meat dishes popular in the country are dahomey fish stew (cooked with fish, fish stock or water, salt, black pepper, flour, vegetable oil, red or cayenne peppers, onions and tomatoes chopped), lamb stewed in peanut sauce (prepared with lamb shoulder, water, salt, peanut butter, vegetables and powdered shrimp), chicken in palm nut concentrate (chicken breasts, oil, salt, pepper, onion,), Gari Pinon (made of beef, oil, onions, tomatoes, pepper), Ago Glain (crabs, oil, black pepper, vinegar, bay leaf, tomatoes, limes juice, parsley, cloves, onions, and Pili Pili), Beninese enjoys sweet dishes like Kanyah (sugar, grind rice and peanuts), Kashata (drop of salt, sugar, grind peanut cinnamon or coconut), Peoki (peanut cake made of corn flour, grated peanuts, Banana leafs and palm oil) and Lemon Flan (prepared with butter, sugar, cornstarch, eggs, milk and grated lemon).

Common drinks that are served in the country are tea (Chai and green tea), Coca-Cola and Fizzi (local soft drinks), Jus de Bissap (kinds of juice that made of sugar, dried hibiscus flowers, mint, vanilla, orange juice), La Beninoise (local beer), Tchoucoutou (sweet local beer) and wine.
