Interesting locations in Benin


The country offers several features for visitors desiring to explore West Africa. It has around 150,000 travelers in 1996. The perfect time and most comfortable period to visit the country is between December and March. National parks in the country are found in north Benin: Pendjari National Park (recognized for its wildlife, including hippopotamuses, lions, monkey, elephants, buffalo, birds and several antelopes) and W National Park (main national park in Niger and recognized for mammals including warthogs, lions, leopards, hippopotamuses, elephants, cheetahs, caracal, buffalo, baboons, and aardvarks). Lake Nokoué, which is found in southern Berlin, is a significant site for the bird watching. On the western side is the well-known water town of Ganvié.

The Royal Palaces of Abomey is included on the UNESCO World Heritage list and one of the recognized and important historically sites located in West Africa and has a number of palaces that built were in early 1900’s. The tentative lists of places on World Heritage include Village Souterrain d'Agongointo-Zoungoudo (1998), Site Lacustre de Ganvié (1996), La Réserve W du Niger et l'habitat vernaculaire du nord Bénin (1996), La ville d'Ouidah (1996) and La ville de Porto-Novo (1996). Other interesting destinations in the country include the Ethnological Museum (Porto Novo); Old Portuguese fort and the Temple of the Sacred Python (town of Ouidah) and Berlin Zoo (animals include gorillas, giant panda and birds).
