Education in Bhutan

You are here: Countries / Bhutan

The Ministry of Education of Bhutan takes charge in providing children with general education from the pre-primary level to Class 12 through the primary education. It is also responsible for training teachers and for the developing the curriculum and teaching-learning materials used in the classrooms.

Primary education is provided free for six years under the goal of universal access to this level of education. Primary schools are inexpensive for parents but some of them cannot send their children to schools because of financial difficulties. To address this problem, the government has established the Bhutan Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper to improve access to and quality of primary education.

The secondary education last six years and is divided into the lower, middle and higher secondary levels with a duration of two years each. Higher education consists of 3-year degree programs leading to a Bachelor’s degree, and 4-year degree programs which are part of a higher technical education. Some of the institutions that offer higher education courses are the National Institute of Education, Institute of Language and Cultural Studies, National Institute of Health Sciences, and the National Institute of Traditional Medicine.

Other educational programs are also offered in a number of schools. These include the adult literacy program which is aimed at increasing the awareness of the people in the value of education to their life, and the basic skills training program in secondary schools, that are designed to make secondary education relevant to the needs of the government and society.
