The Languages spoken in Belarus


Belarusian, which is also known as White Russian, has been the official language since 1990, before which it was Russian. A majority of the people speaks Belarusian, and most also speak either Russian or Ukrainian. Other minority languages include Polish and Yiddish.

The Belarusian or Belarusan language is part of the East Slavonic languages and it shares many grammatical and lexical features with other members of this group. It is based on the Cyrillic script. In recent times, there has been strong emphasis on encouraging the use and learning of Belarusian.
