Gastronomy in Switzerland

Switzerland’s four different cultural zones have some interesting gastronomical experiences to offer. Many of the dishes are hearty fare that come from its heritage of agriculture and dairy and cheese, milk, cream, butter and/or yoghurt are popular ingredients.

Fondue is one of the better known culinary items. Another popular dish is Raclette, which is prepared by melting the side of a cut cheese on an oven. Each guest eats a cut of melted cheese in turn with potatoes and pickles. In German-speaking Switzerland, rösti (pronounced rush-T), roasted potatoes with cheese or bacon on top, is a renowned dish.

Drinks range from plain water, over different types of soft drinks including most internationally well known brands plus some local products, to a great variety of beers and wines. Hot drinks include many different flavors of tea and coffee.
