The 7 historical active volcanoes in the country are Arenal (known since 19th century, the youngest and most active volcano in the country), Irazú, (located in the Cordillera Central near to the city of Cartago), Miravalles (an Andes tic stratovolcano and the last eruption was on 1946), Orosí (an extinct volcano and sited in the Guanacaste Cordillera close to the border with Nicaragua), Poás (an active stratovolcano and situated inside the Poas Volcano National Park), Rincón de la Vieja (located in north-western Costa Rica, erupted lately in February 1998 and stands over 1916 m sea level), and Turrialba (close to Irazú and in 3500 years, had at least 5 large risky eruptions).

There are two waterfalls: the La Fortuna Waterfall (is in central Costa Rica and sited at the base of the inactive Chato volcano) and La Paz (situated along the way from Alajuela). Places included on the World Heritage list are La Amistad International Park (In Latin America, it is an international peace park and managed by Panama and Costa Rica), Cocos Island (one of the national parks in the country and the said island is popular to scuba drivers for its inhabitants of dolphins, hammerhead sharks, rays and other oceanic species) and Area de Conservación Guanacaste (consists of Guanacaste, Junquillal Bay Wildlife Refuge, Santa Rosa and Rincón de la Vieja and sited in the northwestern part of the country).

List of islands recommended for travelers are Alcatráz, Bejuco, Brava, Calero, Cedros, de Chira, Jesucita, Madre de Díos, Machuca, Matina, Moín, Muertos, Pacuare, Penitencia, Plata, Primera, Samay, Segunda, Tolinga, Tortuguero and Isla Violín.
