The Languages spoken in Dominican Republic


Spanish is the national language of the country. The Spanish language schools in the country provide a varied of activities for learner. Usually Spanish and English are the most heard languages though other languages might also be used in specific regions and areas. As of 1995, it is estimated that 7 million of the country’s population speak Spanish. Every region of the country tenders something unique qualities in the language they use. There are notable Spanish language schools in Santo Domingo providing various Spanish language programs.

Other existing languages in the country are Haitian Creole French (160,000), English, Dominican Sign Language, Catalan-Valencian-Balear, Japanese (2,500), North Levantine Spoken Arabic (4,000), Southwestern Caribbean Creole English (23,000), and Chinese (26,000); figures as of early 2000. English is commonly spoken by the Americans, British, upper class, and immigrants that settle in the country. Also, slang language is very usual in the country. Dominicans converse very loud and rapid but it doesn’t mean they are impolite or try to annoy others. It is just the way they execute it. Actually, they are very courteous humans. They make use of their hand and wave around. Also they always welcome others with "¿cómo esta?" or “buenos días".
