The Economy of Algeria


In Algeria 25% of the workforce are fishermen or agriculture workers. Agriculture, production is low and many food items are imported. The products that are cultivated are mostly wheat, potatoes, grapes, date, and oranges.

Fishing is an important industry. Algerians main catch are sardines, tuna, anchovy, and shellfish.

The country’s main resources are petroleum, iron, gas, silver, copper and zinc.

At the end of 1990, the government of Algeria initiated program for its industrialization.

Algeria’s main exports are: natural gas, iron, petroleum, tobacco, vegetables, fruits, cork, furs and phosphates.

There has been a solid economic development in Algeria during the last few years.
