The Government in Algeria


Algeria’s type of government is a republic.

The president of Algeria is the Chief of State and he is elected for 5 years by popular vote. After that term in office he can be elected again for a second term.

The president of Algeria appoints a prime minister to be the head of government. .

The bicameral parliament consists of the National Popular Assembly with 389 seats (the members are elected every 5 years) and the Council of Nations with 144 seats (2/3 of the seats elected every 6 years, 1/3 appointed by the president).

The legal system is socialist, based on French and Islamic law.
