Most of the utility services in Fiji are provided by the government with some support from the private sector. These services include electricity, water supply, transportation and communications.

Electricity services are provided by the Fiji Electricity Authority for residential, business and industrial customers throughout the country. Established in 1966, the government firm is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity at 863 million KWh consumption against 928 million KWh electricity production. To ensure a secure, continuous and reliable electricity supply at the lowest possible cost to customers, the Authority has launched a program to meet increasing electricity demand throughout the country.

The government’s Public Service Department maintains infrastructure for water supply through the pipe system, surface water and ground water facilities. Some residents also use the roof system for harvesting rainwater through the storage tanks.

In communications, the country is served by 102,000 main lines, 109,900 mobile cellular phones, 13 AM and 40 FM radio broadcast stations, a television broadcast station, and 55,000 internet users. Five daily newspapers complement the communication services. They are the Fiji Daily Post, Fiji Live, Fiji Sun, Fiji Times and the UNP Suva. The postal or mail services are provided by Post Fiji, a government agency that has services in various categories to ensure more efficient and faster communications services for the public.
