Gastronomy in France

France is known for its gastronomical delights and any visitor will be spoiled for choice in terms of what they can eat and drink. There are enough restaurants, cafes, rotisseries, patisseries, meat markets and wineries to fill a small continent.

Many of the world’s epicurean delights come from France. Foie gras, truffles, Roquefort cheese, escargot, and vin de table—to name a few. France's North African and Asian populations have also contributed to culinary hotpot and made food in France an art form rather than plain sustenance.

Croissants, baguettes, and a variety of cheeses are also popular. France produces more than 250 cheeses and some of the world's best-loved wines. Other beverages include café-au-lait, espresso, beer, and liqueurs such as pastis (a 90-proof, anise-flavoured cousin of absinthe).
