The Weather and Climate in Ghana

Located just above the equator in West Africa, Ghana enjoys a tropical climate throughout the year. It is bordered by the countries of Côte d’ Ivoire in the west, Togo in the east and Burkina Faso in the north. Its climate is characterized by 2 rainy seasons (April to July and September to November) and a dry desert wind called the harmattan which blows from the northeast during the months of December to March. This wind brings about low humidity and warm days in the north of Ghana. It is rather felt in January in the country’s southern region.

There are 2 rainy seasons in Ghana: from April to July and from September to November, though it is a different case in the north (rainy season is only from April to September). Its relative humidity is high (81%) especially in the southwest region of the country where humidity and rainfall is highest throughout the year. Weather in Ghana is wettest in June and driest in January. The coastal strip is drier than the inland, as rainfall increases as you go inland.

Average temperature in Ghana is between 21°C to 32°C where highest recorded temperature is at 38°C. It is said that the best time to visit the country is from December to February when the weather is dry and temperature ranges from 18°C to 26°C. Temperature in Ghana all throughout the year is mostly warm at all times though it is more comfortable in areas with higher elevation. Accra, the country’s capital, has warmer temperatures compared to that in the inland.
