Ghana has a rich biodiversity which makes it one of the hotspots in eco-tourism in the continent of Africa. Also, the country has numbers of castles and fortresses which the foreign invaders and settlers have built during Ghana’s colonial era. Among the famous tourists sites in Ghana are its national parks, museums, and historic castles.

The Mole National Park in Tamale is the country’s largest eco-tourism site and has the richest biodiversity. Some of its inhabitants include elephants, buffalos, warthogs, antelopes, lions, hyenas and leopards. Other national parks include the Kakum National Park in the central region which is famous for its virgin rainforest. Bird watching is a popular tourist activity in this park. The Ankasa National Park in the Western Region and the Digya National Park near Lake Volta are other national parks that are not to be missed.

Ghana is well known for its Lake Volta which is the largest artificial lake in the world. Located in the Volta region, Lake Volta is just one of the many sites in the region. Some tourist sites in the Volta region include Mount Afadjato, Tagbo Falls, and the Wli Waterfalls.

All the castles in Ghana are named as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. Most of these castles are located in the southern part of the country especially in its capital city, Accra. The Christianborg Castle in Accra was once the British headquarters in 1877. It was the 2nd headquarters of the British after the Cape Coast Castle in Cape Coast located in the Central region. This was built during the 16th century and was the first British government headquarters of the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) which also became a fortress of slaves. The Castle of Elmina is one of the most famous sites in Ghana as it is the location of one of the first Catholic churches in sub-Saharan Africa. It is where the Portuguese first settled in the country and was built in the 15th century.
