Study, Work, Volunteer and Travel in Gambia

Gambia is an interesting Western African country bordered by the Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. Attributed to its geographical location, the land experiences subtropical climatic condition prevailing in the region. Climate further varies from the coastal going to the inland regions. Nonetheless, the relatively stable temperature all throughout the year makes the condition highly adaptable.

Although considered as the smallest African nation, it is home to the great Gambia River which cradled early civilization nesting along the river bank. No wonder, it became the most attractive refuge of Western African tribes that settled in the territory back in the ancient times. This resulted to ethnic diversity that is apparent up to the present.

The natives were not only the ones mesmerized by its location strategic to the global trade. In fact, empires such as France and England were aggressive to gain control of the territory especially the Gambia River which became the centre of Western trade as early as 1500.

Trading of produce became very popular that more and more European countries participated in bulky barter transactions. Trade has but shifted to the auction of African slaves later on which became a lucrative market that outdone the other commodities. In early 1800, this has been abolished long after the republic was acquired by the British Empire. One century thereafter, Gambia assumed full statehood upon its liberation from the United Kingdom.

Post-colonial period has been tough for the nation even at the present. The Gambian Republic was even considered as one of the poorest countries in the world. Reforms in the national level specifically in education and economy have been instituted with the help of the international community. Gradual growth and development are expected to arise out of these efforts.
