The Climate in Guinea

The climatic condition of the country of Guinea is tropical in nature and can be divided into two rotating seasons which is the dry season, from November to March, and the wet season, from April – October. It is due to the onset of drifting inter-tropical convergence zone or ITCZ, especially in the month of June that brings along with it heavy rainfall during the wet season. The harmattan wind propels from the northeastern part of the Sahara once the ITCZ moves further southward during the month of November, thereby making the climate hot and dry. The country’s capital, which is Conakry, experiences year round average high of 29°C and the low of 23°C; its average rainfall is 430 cm per year. The month of April is the hottest while July and August are the wettest and heavy down pouring may result to most of the roads being blocked.

The upper region of Guinea, particularly the Futa Jallon, is affected with least amount of rainfall with an average temperature reaching to about 14°C thereby ascending during the dry season. Rainfall in the highlands averages about 280 cm annually; temperatures are relatively equable owing to the altitude, although with an average daily range of 18 degrees Celsius.
