Ireland, or Eire as the Irish call it, is the third largest island in Europe. Officially, the Republic of Ireland covers only five sixths of the island however and the rest is claimed by Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom. The two parts share many important institutions and customs.
The Republic of Ireland joined the United Nations in 1955 and the European Community (now the European Union) in 1973. A prosperous, modern, technologically-advanced Celtic Tiger economy, Ireland is one of the most attractive cities in Europe today.
The capital of Ireland is Dublin. A vibrant and multicultural city, Dublin is also ranked among the top tourist destinations in Europe.
