Italy has a strategic location dominating central Mediterranean as well as southern sea and air approaches to Western Europe. It shares its northern alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

Rome is the capital city of Italy and of the Lazio region, as well as the country's largest and most populous community. It is located in the central-western portion of the Italian peninsula. As one of the few major European cities that escaped World War II relatively unscathed, central Rome remains essentially Renaissance and Baroque in character. Rome is also an important center for higher education and its first university, La Sapienza, is the largest in Europe and the second largest in the World.

Milan is one of the largest cities in Italy and its most populous metropolitan area. It is located in the plains of Lombardy. The city is one of the world's major commercial and financial centers, and one of the wealthiest cities in the European Union, apart from being a global fashion capital. It is also home to many universities and other institutions of higher learning.

Naples is capital of the Campania region and the Province of Naples and its metropolitan area of Naples is one of the largest in Italy. The inhabitants are known as Neapolitans. Rich in historical, artistic and cultural traditions, Naples is also an important seat of higher learning.
