Local Services in Jamaica


Telecommunications services in the country are totally modern. The telephone service is supplied by Cable and Wireless of Jamaica Limited which held a monopoly since the start of 21st century. In 2001, the government permitted for domestic rivalry, for the purpose that market will be entirely competitive by 2003. The foreign groups that bought license to launch mobile phone service in Jamaica are Mossel Limited (Irish firm) and Cellular One Caribbean (St. Maarten-based U.S. Company).

The public transportations in the country are route taxis and minibuses. An option for the public transportation in the country is the private taxis. It is pricier but offer more comfort. Other options are bicycle rentals, internal air services, chartered helicopters between airports and moped rentals. The road network has approximately 21,000 kilometers of roads, of which is above 15,000 kilometers is cemented. In late 1990s, the Jamaican government through the support of investors, embarked on a movement of infrastructural development projects. It includes the construction of freeways systems. The railways in the country are no longer popular as they previously were, mostly have been change by roadways as the main way of transport.

The two international airports in the country are Sangster International Airport in the resort city of Montego Bay and Norman Manley International Airport settled in Kingston. There are also local traveler airports at Mandeville, Negril, Ocho Ríos, Port Antonio, and Tinson Pen.
