The Culture of Madagascar

Madagascar is a very interesting country with several mysterious to discover with regards to their people, nature and animals. The country developed its own culture and way of life.

Malagas is the main language. Other languages spoken in the country are French and English. Half of the populations in the country observe traditional religion. Other religions practiced are Christianity and Islam. The regular Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter are observed. Other celebrated events are Insurrection Day (March 29), Anniversary Day (8 May) and Republic Day (30 December). People in Madagascar respected their ancestors, which they believe and pray. They arranged a big party if one of their family member pass away. They dance around the cemetery until morning and they even sacrifice a cow. Interments in the country are very cheery.

The textile arts of the country play a main role in creating clothes. The hand made natural fiber clothes are recognized as “lamba”, which is usually used as a ritual gift. They also make stone and wood cravings.

Cuisine in the country is influenced by Arabia, China, France and India. Spicy curries are well-like and French dishes are also served at the best hotels and restaurants in the country. Koba, a pate of rice, peanut and banana, is the national snack.

The Malagasy are occupied in several activities and sports. Madagascar sports include basketball, boxing, football, judo, rugby, tennis and among others. The major sports in the country are women's tennis and women’s basketball. They take part in the World Cup and all African games.
