The Climate in Mongolia

The topography of Mongolia varies considerably. The southern region mainly composes of the Gobi Desert (biggest desert area in Asia and known for its historical part of the Mongol Empire) while the northern and western are mostly cold and mountainous regions. Mongolia has four distinct seasons – winter (November to March), spring (April to June), summer (July to September), and fall (October to November). Winter normally is the longest season of all. Summer in Mongolia experiences the most rain throughout the year and only lasts for about 100 days.

The majority of Mongolia experiences hot summer and very chilly winter. Half of Mongolia has average temperature of below 0°C. January can be the coldest month when average temperature may reach as low as -30°C (-22°F) while July can be the hottest month when temperature may reach as high as 35°C. The city of Ulaanbaatar records the lowest average temperature in all national capitals in the world. It goes through an intense continental weather characterized by long and cold winters but with short summers.
