The Weather and Climate in Malta

You are here: Countries / Malta

Being situated in the Mediterranean but is also adjacent to Africa and the Middle East regions, Malta enjoys a seemingly Mediterranean subtropical climate. More or less, Malta’s climate can be compared to that of California except that Malta is surrounded by sea which may cause some small variance from the famous Californian climate.

Basically, Maltese climate is characterized by two distinct seasons only, winter and summer. Winters in Malta are not so cold because snows are non-existent. In fact, it was only during February of 1895, January of 1905 and January of 1962 when snow were seen by the Maltese people. Average temperature during winters usually hovers around 9°C to 10 °C while for the whole year, Malta sees 14°C as its average low temperature.

The Maltese Summer on the other hand is hot not in terms of having high temperatures but because rain rarely visit the island. The absence of rain in the land during summer is a literal dry spell and is a bane to the plants as well as the animals dependent on plants. Temperature during summer has been observed to be around 27°C to 30°C. Throughout the year, Malta experiences an average monthly high temperature of 22.3°C.

As per the Malta’s temperature history, temperature has been observed to have hit 1.2°C as its lowest temperature ever in 1895 and 43.8°C as the hottest temperature recorded on August 1999.

On the whole, Malta has a very nice climate, especially its mild winter climate. Although its summer is not scorching hot but it could really get dry and so it would be a much better winter getaway for tourists as they can still enjoy all that Malta has to offer.
