The Climate in Norway

The climate in Norway is temperate because of the warming effects of the Gulf Stream flowing along its coast. The interior highlands have an Arctic climate in winter with snow, strong winds and severe frosts, but during summer, daytime temperatures can rise above 86°F (30°C). Coastal areas have comparatively mild winter conditions. Gales, rain and cloud are likely along the west coast, particularly in winter, and the rainfall is frequent and heavy. The lowland area around Oslo is the driest and warmest part of the country in summer.

Average July temperatures are 16°C (61°F) in the Oslo area and 11°C (52°F) in the north, though temperature extremes are always possible. In January, the average maximum temperature is 1°C (34°F) in the south and -3°C (27°F) in the north.

In midsummer the north sees no night and even southern Norway has daylight from 04:00 to 23:00. On the other hand, most days in winter have twilight conditions.
