The Education System in Peru


The Ministry of Education is responsible for planning, enforcing and managing all educational policies and programs of the national government.  It was established in 1837.  Jose Antonio Chang is the current Minister of Education.  Spanish is the primary language used in various schools and universities at all levels.  In 1999, the Peruvian government allocated 3.2% of GDP to education.  As of 2005, the literacy rate of Peru is 88.9%. 

According to the Constitution, education is free and required in public schools for the initial, primary and secondary levels.  Primary level is attended by students with ages from 6-12 for 6 years.  Secondary level is taken for 5 years by students ranging from 12-17 years of old.  Public colleges and universities also offer free education to students who are less financially able and have outstanding academic performance.  Some of the reputable universities in Peru include the University of Lima, Catholic University of Santa Maria, Los Andes Peruvian University, Pontifica Universidad Catolica del Peru, and the National University of San Marcos which is the oldest university in Peru founded in 1551.
