Study, Work or Volunteer in Peru

Peru is one of the most diverse and fascinating countries in the world. It is the third largest South American nation covering an area of 1,285,215 sq. km. It can be divided into three primary areas: jungle, mountains and coast. The Peruvian population, approximated at 28 million, is multi-ethnic, including Europeans, Asians, Africans and Amerindians.

The empires of Chimor, Chachapoyas, and Inca have tremendous influences on the early civilization of Peru. Independence from Spain was declared in July 28, 1821. Peru has a representative democratic republic type of government with Alan Garcia Perez and as the current president. Lima is the capital and largest city. Spanish is the official language generally used in education, businesses and various sectors. Peru’s GDP in 2007 based on PPP is valued at roughly $208 million (51st) with a per capita of $7,410 (79th).

The climate in Peru greatly varies in major geographic regions including the Andes and coastal areas. There exist 3 social classes: upper class, middle class (mostly working professionals), and lower class (farmers and rural population). Because of its amazing dishes, Peru is dubbed as the “Gastronomic Capital of the Americas”. Popular cuisines include Arroz con pollo, chupe de pescado, and papa rellena. Almost 81% of the population belongs to the Roman Catholic Church.

Peru tenders a unique chance to experience an unbelievably wide range of prominent scenery, a vibrant living culture and a wealth of heritage such as the Inca sites. The Andes are the second highest range of mountain in the world. It provides amazingly attractive scenery, mountaineering options and whitewater sports. But it is also one of the world’s most precarious mountain ranges which cause flash floods, landslides and earthquakes.
