The Languages spoken in Puerto Rico

The official languages of the country are Spanish and English. Spanish represents as the primary language and also spoken by over 400 million populace worldwide, majority of which are in Spain and Latin America. It developed several local distinctions or dialects. These distinctions are the outcome of different areas and countries combining their culture and history that creates differences in concepts, usage, vocabulary and individual accents. English is compulsory in all federal proceedings and trained as a second language in both private and public schools from primary to secondary levels and in universities. Some people develop their English language proficiencies by private courses, further learning or practice of the said language in work and other locations. It is also the major language spoken in all tourist vicinity and approximately 25% of the population speak English but with defined capacities.

Language causes a main issue to Puerto Rican teaching and culture as of 1898. English is made by U.S. authorities as the language of teaching in schools. In 1930, strong ethnic opposition creates change by making Spanish as the language of instruction and English as the second language. The leaders of pro-commonwealth signed a legislature devising Spanish the only official language of the country. That verdict was reversed by Governor Pedro J. Rossello, who signed legislation reinstating equal level of Spanish and English language.
