The Climate in Portugal

The best times to visit Portugal are during the period of spring and fall.  Wintertime begins in November or December and ends to February or March.  Particularly in the north and central parts including Lisbon, the winter is showery and chilly.  The weather condition normally remains warm from May to September.

The climate in Azores is constantly mild during the year. The average temperatures are: from January to March 17ºC/ 63ºF, April to June 20ºC/66ºF, July to September 24ºC/75ºF and October to December 19ºC/70ºF. In Algarve, the climate is moderate year-round with short mild winters, long hot summers and early springs.  The west coast is mostly somewhat cooler than the east.  In the middle of the summer it is highly hot in Alentejo.  An evening air cools the temperature down on the coast. The climate in Madeira is semitropical and very mild, with average temperatures changing between 75.2 ºF in summer and 66.2 ºF in winter.  The sea temperature is satisfying all year round generally influenced by the Gulf Stream.  It changes between 64.4 ºF in winter and 71.6 ºF in summer.

The peak season in Portugal covers from June to September.  In Algarve, the tourist season end from February until November and in the north from May until September.  The required clothing is light to medium weights. Rainwear is also suggested.
