Study, Work or Volunteer in Romania

Romania is a country situated in Southeast Central Europe and shares borders with Hungary, Serbia, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and the Republic of Moldova. It has the largest surface area in southeastern Europe and 12th in Europe. Due its location, Romania has transitional climate between temperate and continental and has 4 distinct seasons. The average annual weather is 11°C (52°F) in the south and 8°C (46°F) in the north.

On July 13, 1878, Romania’s independence was officially recognized. The Communism government was brought down in the late 1980s. Its government takes the framework of a unitary semi-presidential democratic republic whereby the President and Prime Minister shares executive functions. The current president is Traian Basescu while the current prime minister is Emil Boc. Romania is categorized as an upper-middle income nation. The Romanian Statistics Office reported a 7.7% growth in GDP in 2006 and was one of the highest in rates in Europe. The World Bank also claimed Romania as the 2nd faster economic reformer in 2006 after to Georgia. Romania became a member state of the European Union and part of its single market in 2007.

The Romanian culture is the meeting point of 3 regions – Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans giving the country a very distinctive background as a result of its natural features and historical transformation. French and German influences have strongly defined the Modern Romanian cultures. The country has no official religion though the prevailing religious denomination is the Romanian Orthodox Church which constitutes of about 87% of the population. The Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Pentecostalism, and Romanian Greek-Catholic Church have also significant followers. Football is no doubt the most popular sport in the country followed by tennis and ruby.
