Getting Visas to Romania

Nationals of the UK, Canada, US, and several EU countries can enter Romania without visa and stay for a maximum of 90 days while Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakian citizens can visit for a maximum of 30 days without a visa. When applying for any Romanian visa, the following credentials are required: documents stating the purpose of the trip, duration of stay, documents certifying financial capability, and return plane tickets to country of destination.

The following are the types of visas issued by the Romanian government:

  • Transit Visa (Letter A) – issued to foreigners that require access to international area/premises of an airport while waiting for boarding to their country of destination.
  • Transit Visa (Letter B) – issued to aliens that require access to Romanian territories for a maximum of 5 days.
  • Short-Stay Visa (Letter C) – granted to visitors for the following reasons: tourism purposes, visit a family or friend, to do business, participate in a sporting event, for official government function, and other cultural, academic or scientific affairs. The holder is allowed to stay in Romania for 90 days within an interval of up to 6 months (for multiple-entry visa) from the date of entry. A short-stay visa can not be extended under any circumstance.
  • Long-Stay Visa (Letter D) – granted to foreigners for the following purposes: perform economic, commercial, religious or professional activities, to work, study, or conduct researching. The holder is allowed to stay in Romania for 90 days. To extend a long-stay visa, the holder must personally submit an official request to the nearest Romanian Immigration Office at holder’s place of residence at least 30 days before the expiration of the visa.
