Russia shares land borders with the following countries: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia, and North Korea. It is also close to the United States (Alaska state), Sweden, and Japan across relatively small stretches of water (the Bering Strait, the Baltic Sea, and La Pérouse Strait, respectively).

Moscow is not only the capital of Russia but also an important economic and cultural hub. The city’s architecture and performing arts culture are world-renowned. It is home to many scientific and educational institutions, as well as numerous sport facilities.

Saint Petersburg is located on the delta of the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. Russia's second-largest city, it is also Europe's eleventh largest metropolitan area and a major European cultural center. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
