The Languages spoken in Sweden

The official language of Sweden is Swedish, which is very similar to the other Scandinavian languages—Danish, Norwegian and Icelandic. Along with the other North Germanic languages, Swedish is a descendant of Old Norse, the common Scandinavian language of the Viking Era.

Sami, a minority language, is spoken by Sweden's oldest ethnic minority, the Sami. The area, historically related to this group of people, can be found in northern Sweden, as well as in northern Finland and Norway.

Because of immigration in the second half of the 20th century, many foreign languages are now represented and they are frequently used within the immigrant groups respectively.

English is taught as a compulsory secondary language in Swedish schools.
