Religious beliefs in Sweden

About 78% of Swedes belong to the Church of Sweden, but the number is decreasing by about one percent every year. Children automatically become members of the Church of Sweden at birth, provided at least one of the parents is a member and does not renounce membership on behalf of the child within six weeks.

Some 275,000 Swedes are members of various free churches and immigration has meant that there are now some 92,000 Roman Catholics and 100,000 Eastern Orthodox Christians living in Sweden.

Due to immigration, Sweden also has a significant Muslim population. As many as 500,000 are Muslims and between 80,000 - 400,000 actively practice Islam.

There are a few Jews, Buddhists and Hindus. Sweden has a large minority who have no religion. Swedish society is known to be comparatively secular and non-religious.
