This small city-state in south-east Asia is remarkable for its efficiency, cleanliness and quality of life. What started out as small British settlement is today one of the world's most prosperous countries with strong international trading links (its port is one of the world's busiest in terms of tonnage handled) and with per capita GDP equal to that of the leading nations of Western Europe.
Singapore is often referred to as one of Asia's economic "tigers". However, on the flipside Singapore has often been criticised for its strict social control and liberal use of the death penalty.
