The country is situated on the west coast of Central America, with 8,123 sq. miles as the total area. It is almost as big as the size of Massachusetts. It is a mountainous land with the uppermost points reaching above 6,000 ft. The country has a tropical weather with definite dry and wet seasons.

Temperatures slightly change with season; altitude is the primary determinant. The Pacific valleys are consistently hot with ranges from 25°C to 29°C yearly average. San Salvador is the example of central upland, with yearly average temperature of 23°C. From 12°C to 23°C is the annual average in mountain areas. The rainy season, identified locally as winter or invierno runs between May to October. Rainfall throughout this season usually comes from low pressure on the top of the Pacific and mostly falls in the afternoon with heavy shower. Though hurricanes seldom form in the Pacific, they rarely affect the country. Dry season extends from November to April. This season is identified locally as summer or verano.

The required attire in coastal areas during wet season is lightweight clothes. Waterproof clothing suitable for the entire year. Areas in higher altitudes should wear warm outfit.
