The Culture of Thailand

Thailand has a diverse culture. It is generally influenced by Buddhism. Theravada Buddhism is the main theology and central to modern Thai identity and faith. Thai culture manages to suit secular in development of the country.

Values. Buddhism has great despotism or effect on social values and tradition. The important concept in Thai culture is seniority as proof of respect. Honor towards ancestors is a fundamental component of Thai spiritual practice. Elders perform a significant role in family outcomes or ceremonies. The wai is a very distinctive Thai custom. It is somehow comparable with India’s namaste gesture and is executed when greeting, acknowledging or bidding farewell to somebody.

Crafts & Arts. The Thai arts combine the latest techniques as well as the traditional styles. The crafts include decorative items to sustain the exact Thai style. It is believed that the most prominent literature works of Thailand is their Ramayana version called Ramakien and the poems of Sunthorn Phu.

Festivities. The Thai New Year or Songkran is very important holiday that is celebrated from April 13 to 15. It is accompanied with lively water throwing all over the country. To date, the water is sometimes replaced with squirt guns, water hoses and even powders. Loy Krathong is another event observed during the 12 full moon of the Thai lunar calendar. Auspicious Sport. The national sport in Thailand is Muay Thai or Thai Boxing. Muay Thai is similar to martial arts styles. In 1990s Muay Thai started to be very popular sport around the world. Football is also a very common sport in Thailand.
