In 1991, the Buchan School (which was then an Independent School for Girls) and the College were brought together under a single Board of Governors to share the same vision, outlook and goals. The Buchan School is now the Preparatory School of the College which offers co-educational learning from 3 years to 18 years. Boarding is available from age 11.
Academic Record
King William's College has a first class academic record and was recently given a strong assessment during an external inspection. A wide range of subjects is available at GCSE and the College is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school and this programme is offered to all suitable sixth formers. In 2005, the GCSE pass rate was 100% with 40% gaining A* or A grades. In the IB Diploma, 98% of candidates obtained their full diploma; the equivalent grades at A level would be 37% A grades and 72% A and B grades. These results put us in 33rd position out of the best 900 schools in the Times League Table. Over 90% of our students were offered a place by their first choice university. The 2005 results have recently been announced and the strong showing of the previous pupil cadre has been consolidated confirming King William's College as a leading IB school.
Facilities
College Boarding facilities undergo regular renovation and upgrading and all 6th Formers are in single or twin rooms. Boys are located in a dedicated boarding house next to the main buildings while the girls boarding is located within the main school. Each house has its own housemaster or housemistress who is responsible for the pastoral and academic welfare of each pupil in his or her care.
Brand new 6th Form and 5th Form Centres with the modern facilities in relaxed surroundings have recently been completed. The College has first class IT facilities throughout including dedicated IT suites. All student study bedrooms are wired with a broadband connection for which there is no extra charge.
There is an excellent range of sporting facilities and an all weather hockey surface is due for completion in late autumn 2003. The school has a popular and effective CCF and runs a superb Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.
Art, Drama and Music
The School has a very strong record in art, drama and music. Over 50% of all pupils seek specialist tuition in a musical instrument and College has a dedicated Music Centre including individual tuition rooms. College drama productions are a feature of Manx life and the standard of productions is extremely high. A new Performing Arts Centre is at the design and planning stage.
The International Baccalaureate
