| Contact this school | | Description | | The University of Tartu is the oldest and largest multidisciplinary public university of Estonia and one of the best-known in Northern and Eastern Europe. Founded in 1632, it has 11 faculties, 7 colleges and 3 specialized research institutions that boast long-standing academic traditions. Almost 19 000 students choose the University of Tartu to be their alma mater. Estonia offers a unique perspective on the successful transition to democracy and recent accession to the EU. Tartu is Estonia’s second largest city, with 100 000 people, and is located 2.5 hours from the airport and sea port of Tallinn, with connections to major cities in Europe and Russia. English is spoken widely here, and with students making up one fifth of the population, Tartu is a true University town. Student support system at the University of Tartu is well established. All international students get a personal tutor to assist them with practical issues before arrival and during their stay at the University. Courses at the International Summer University last for 2-4 weeks. DOCTORAL STUDIES (4 years) The University of Tartu comprises six centers of research excellence, of which one is also European Commission Center of Excellence. The University of Tartu is the only Baltic university member of the Coimbra Group, uniting reputable European research universities of long-standing traditions.
