| Contacta con este centro | | Descripción | | The idea that Malawi should have a University was first conceived soon after the country got its independence in 1964. In October 1964, the University of Malawi was founded under the University of Malawi (Provisional Council) Act which was later replaced by the University of Malawi Act of 1974. The Act was further amended in 1998.
Teaching started on 29th September 1965 at the newly established campus which used to be an Asian Secondary School in Blantyre. Only 90 students had been enrolled. By 1967, the then Institute of Public Administration at Mpemba, the Soche Hill College of Education, the Polytechnic, all these in Blantyre, and Bunda College of Agriculture in Lilongwe were incorporated as constituent colleges of the University of Malawi.
Except Bunda College and the Polytechnic, the other colleges moved to Zomba in 1973 to form the now Chancellor College campus.
Kamuzu College of Nursing became the fourth constituent college in September 1979 and the College of Medicine in Blantyre became the fifth constituent college when it was established in 1991.
At present there are over 5,000 students on degree, diploma and certificate programmes.
Bunda College of Agriculture is situated in Lilongwe in the Central Region of the country, 35.2 km from the Capital City.
Chancellor College is located in Zomba in the Southern Region of Malawi. The College has about 262 members of academic and administrative staff and an enrolment of 1,812 students.
The college has five faculties, namely:
Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Social Science and Faculty of Education. Departments service each faculty as follows:
Education: Curriculum and Teaching Studies and Educational Foundations;
Humanities: African Languages and Linguistics, Classics, English, Fine and Performing Arts, French, Language and Communication Skills, Philosophy and Theology and Religious Studies;
Science: Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Earth Sciences, Population Studies, Home Economics, Physics, Mathematical Sciences.
Social Science: Economics, History, Psychology, Political and Administrative Studies and Sociology;
Law: Foundational Law and Practical Legal Studies.
Kamuzu College of Nursing has one faculty, the Faculty of Nursing. The College is made up of two campuses namely Blantyre campus situated in the City of Blantyre within the premises of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and Lilongwe campus situated in Lilongwe overlooking Lilongwe Central Hospital. The College has a student enrolment of 300, and 73 members of academic and administrative staff.
The College of Medicine is located in Blantyre along the Mahatma Gandhi Road, a few kilometres away from Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, which is the main teaching hospital. The College opened its doors in September 1991. It has a number of annexes at Zomba Central Hospital, Kasungu Hospital, Mangochi Hospital, Rumphi Hospital and Lilongwe Central Hospital. The college has a capacity of 169 students and 95 academic and administrative members of staff.
The college offers a degree programme in Science of Medicine. The programme is an integration of Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical disciplines of the college.
The two disciplines fall under one faculty, the Faculty of Medicine which has the following departments:
Anaesthesia, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Community Health, Haematology, Medicine, Microbiology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Physiology and Surgery. Establishment of Pharmacology and Radiology Departments is underway .
The Polytechnic is situated in the heart of the City of Blantyre. The Polytechnic is composed of the Faculties of Applied Studies, Commerce, Engineering and Education and Media Studies.
These faculties are serviced by departments as follows:
Applied Studies: Computing and Information Technology, Environmental Health, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Biochemical Sciences;
Commerce: Accountancy, Business Administration and Management;
Engineering: Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.
Education and Media Studies: Technical Education, Journalism and Media Studies, and Language and Communication.
