or UCM) was one the first private Universities in Mozambique. It was also the first university to have its administrative headquarters outside Maputo, the country’s capital. The university was set up as a not-for-profit institution and resulted from peace talks in Rome between the two political parties, Renamo and Frelimo. In view of this, one of the main aims of the university has always been to provide higher education to disadvantaged regions, particularly in the North and the center of the country, and to contribute to the process of reconciliation, decentralization and development in Mozambique in a peaceful and just way.
UCM is an institution of the Catholic Church in Mozambique. As such, it aims to foster an authentic humanistic community that embraces Christian values, thoughts and ideals including peace, the protection of the rights of individuals and respect for others. Although a Christian institution, it encourages students and lecturers from all faiths to attend. An important mission of UCM is to prepare young adults to meet the challenges of contemporary life in Mozambique by helping them develop the appropriate skills and acquire the necessary knowledge to respond the moral and socio-economic development of their country and their communities.
