L'école a démarré sa première année de formation en 1986 avec un effectif de 314 étudiants répartis en trois spécialités: génie mécanique, génie électrique et génie civil. Dès 1989 et malgré son statut d'école, l'établissement a étendu sa formation à d'autres filières de l'enseignement supérieur (tronc commun technologie, des cycles longs et cours de différentes filières) . Ainsi en 1997 l'établissement est passsé au statut de Centre Universitaire. Avec l'extention des structures du centre universitaire de Laghouat et l'élargissement du spectre des formations dispensées, le centre a été élevé au rang d'université en Octobre 2001.
