It is the centre of higher education for the Swedish-speaking minority (6% of the total population) and has a special responsibility to provide for the university-level research and educational needs of the country’s Swedish language population. Part of Åbo Akademi University’s overarching national responsibility for university education in Swedish includes a commitment to provide educational opportunities across a broad range of areas. Founded as a private university in 1918, Åbo Akademi University became state-owned in 1981. Today Åbo Akademi University is a comprehensive research university with seven faculties.
