The university is oriented to interdisciplinary research on, and the study of, social change and the policy implications of transition to open societies. On June 21, 2004, the Hungarian Parliament had passed the Act No. LXI. to establish a Hungarian private higher education institution under the name Közép-európai Egyetem (Central European University) -- the act came into force on April 1, 2005 (published in Magyar Közlöny No. 42/2005), meaning full Hungarian accreditation.
