Description

The University was founded in 1949. In the beginning it worked as a regional faculty of the Technical University of Budapest, later (in 1951) it became independent under the name of Veszprém University of Chemical Engineering. From 1991 the University is called the University of Veszprém. The University first offered courses in four areas of Chemical Technology (Oil- and Coal Technology, Electrochemical Industry, Inorganic Chemical Technology, Silicate Chemistry) then from the middle of the sixties further two courses (Nuclear Chemistry and Technology, Process Control and System Engineering) became part of the Chemical Engineering education in Veszprém.

A Pannon Egyetem székhelye Veszprém, az ország egyik legrégibb városa. Itt mûködött az a káptalani fõiskola, ahol a XIII. században a hét szabad mûvészet (filozófia, grammatika, retorika, dialektika, aritmetika, geometria, asztronómia) mellett jogot is tanítottak. Szerénytelenség lenne az intézmény jogutódjaként említeni egyetemünket, de Veszprém már akkor is tudásközpontként mûködött, majd a huszadik század közepén vált egyetemi várossá. 1949-ben a József Nádor Mûszaki és Gazdaságtudományi Egyetem átszervezése után a belõle kialakított és csak mérnöki karokból álló Budapesti Mûszaki Egyetem (BME) Nehézvegyipari Karának telephelyéül Veszprémet választották. A BME Kémiai Technológia Tanszékének fiatal adjunktusa, Polinszky Károly 1949 tavaszán kapott megbízást arra, hogy szervezze meg ezt az új kart (Az 1950-es években hazánk néhány kémikusa a Veszprémi Vegyipari Egyetemet humorosan, de sok szeretettel a Polinszky által alapított Károly Egyetemnek nevezte).
