Semester at Sea is a study abroad program, and the only one of its kind in the world. It was created in 1963, since when the non-profit Institute for Shipboard Education has launched 100 Semester at Sea voyages, and educated more than 50,000 students from 1,500 institutions. The main idea of the program is that undergraduates, lifelong learners, faculty and lecturers live and learn together, travelling on a ship, which acts as their campus. These voyages are organized each fall and spring semesters, whilst credit earned is fully transferable by the University of Virginia. Program participants learn history, have access to useful facts and figures, and meet the leaders of this global educational program.
